Young children find dinosaurs and trains simply fascinating, and the children in the Pteranodon family are no exception. Buddy and his brothers and sister are insatiably curious about the many different types of dinosaurs that live not only in their own Cretaceous period, but in the entire Mesozoic era. Lucky for them, their mother, the dinosaur train, and the train’s conductor stand at the ready to take them on time-traveling adventures to meet any kind of dinosaur they desire. This DVD compilation follows the Pteranodon family as they travel to see a concert by the crested Corythosauruses, who just happen to be Mom’s favorite musical group, plus the fast-running Ornithomimus, tiny Microraptors, herd-loving Einiosaurus, and a host of other dinosaurs. Then Buddy has a great idea: get every species listed in the “Dinosaurs A to Z” song to board the dinosaur train at the same time and end with a huge dinosaur picnic at Troodon Town. The Pteranodon family and the conductor make Buddy’s dream a reality in the four-part “Dinosaurs A to Z.” Of course there’s plenty of fun music along the way, as well as an abundance of Buddy’s hypotheses to be tested and quite a bit of discussion about the similarities and differences between the different dinosaurs and the various ways to classify them. The compilation ends with the “Festival of Lights” episode in which the Pteranodon family travels to the North Pole on the winter solstice to see the amazing lights of the aurora borealis. Dinosaur Train is a fun animated show that feeds children’s fascination with dinosaurs while instilling knowledge of basic scientific inquiry and process. Bonus features include several short live-action “Dr. Scott the Paleontologist” segments about a variety of dinosaurs, an interactive DVD-ROM game, coloring pages, and information for parents.
